OFFICE OF EARLY LITERACY |
Our mission is not to teach reading but to help parents and children get ready to learn to read and write. Early literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they actually start formal instruction. It is the process and activities that build a foundation to help children get ready to learn to read.
Knowing how to hold a book, learning a new word, asking a question, scribbling, or remembering the sound of a letter are all early literacy activities. Parents can help their children's readiness to read with repeated language exploration and play. Having fun with books and language at a very early age is key to future learning success.
